FAQ's:
Question: I'm concerned about my bird getting sick from the finish on the crate. What type of information can you provide me with about what type of finish it is and what it contains?
Answer: The electroplate finish on MIDWEST Birdcages is a finish applied by an electrolysis process that actually bonds the color to the wire making it virtually non-chippable. MIDWEST has, of course, researched all the materials used on the birdcages and deemed it a safe product to produce and sell to the consumer. We do realize that birds are very sensitive to certain metals, zinc in particular, and have found that zinc poisoning in birds comes from galvanized wire. MIDWEST does not use galvanized wire on any bird product.
Question: Does the finish contain zinc?
Answer: All metals have some levels of zinc in them, but our products are produced with materials that are tested to assure the safety of the animal.
Question: Does the black finish chip? Will my bird be able to chip the finish?
Answer: The finish is bonded to the wire, but if the bird were to continually peck at a particular spot on the crate, you would eventually see the wear and tear to the finish.
Question: I am interested in purchasing your cages but have a very big question. Are they ZINC plated? Parrots get zinc poisoning if they at all chew on the wires...so how do you explain coating a cage in zinc?? Do you have any not containing zinc. I like your cages very much but have already dealt with zinc poisoning and it's not very pleasant.
Answer: MIDWEST uses a zinc plated finish on many of the dog products, but not on our birdcages. MIDWEST plating is done through an electroplating process to a nominal thickness of .2mil. This process provides for adhesion of the plating to the wire and is chip and flake resistant. In order for a bird to ingest any detrimental levels of zinc, it would have to ingest a large piece of the wire. From the research done by MIDWEST, metal toxicity in birds is from lead and zinc associated with galvanized wire. Galvanizing processing is very different from electroplating. Galvanizing is a hot dip/air dry process that could be ingested easily, and at any levels, could affect the health of the bird. MIDWEST does not use this process.
